Buitrago del Lozoya: a town shaped by 10 centuries of history
Spain — and especially Madrid — makes many people fall in love with its lifestyle thanks to the variety of experiences it offers.
We can enjoy life in a vibrant capital city, with its culture, restaurants, museums and international atmosphere, while also having easy access to nature, historic towns and peaceful landscapes just a short distance away.
For international residents living in Madrid, this balance is one of the reasons why the region is so attractive: dynamic city life combined with history and nature.
One beautiful example is Buitrago del Lozoya, located approximately 75 km north of Madrid, ideal for a peaceful day trip or weekend escape.
What happened over 10 centuries of history
Buitrago del Lozoya has been shaped by several historical periods, which explain why today we can still admire its walls, castle and medieval streets.
9th–11th centuries (Muslim period)
The settlement developed as a fortified location, thanks to its strategic position surrounded by the Lozoya River, which created a natural defence.
1085 – Christian reconquest (11th century)
King Alfonso VI incorporated the territory into the Kingdom of Castile, consolidating the town as a Christian medieval settlement.
12th–14th centuries – construction of the walls
The stone defensive walls were built and reinforced to protect the population.
These walls are still visible today and form one of the best preserved medieval fortifications in the Community of Madrid.

15th century – construction of the castle
The castle was built by the Mendoza family, an important noble family, as a residence and symbol of power.
Its Gothic-Mudéjar style reflects the influence of both Christian and Islamic architecture, characteristic of medieval Spain.
Because the town structure has been preserved over centuries, Buitrago del Lozoya is today considered one of the most authentic medieval villages near Madrid.
